Easy Barley Casserole
1 cup pearl barley 2 tablespoons butter ¾ cup chopped onion ⅓ cup slivered almonds 3 cups Watkins Chicken Soup & gravy base, made into chicken broth 1. Rinse barley and drain. Melt butter in medium skillet. Add barley, onion and almonds. Cook until lightly browned. Place in slow cooker, add chicken broth, cover and cook on Low 4½ to 5 hours or until barley is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Makes 6 servings.

Home made syrup.
1 cup water 1 cup white sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon Watkins vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon Watkins maple extract 1/2 teaspoon Watkins butter extract (optional) In boiler on top of stove mix water, and both sugars. Bring to a boil and boil for 3 minutes no longer. Whisk the maple and vanilla extract in and that is it. I have a glass syrup container I put mine in. My husband just ate some and said it is as good as any we have ever bought. Cook until thick as you like. |
